THEtechnique
Bangkok's bath houses formalised soapy massage in the mid-twentieth century, and Japan's soaplands arrived at much the same thing independently. The premise in both places was that washing a person properly is already bodywork. Lather only made it possible to do it slowly.
It begins standing, under running water. Upright, the therapist can lean her weight against you with the floor taking the load rather than her arms. Lather is laid on thick and renewed as it thins, because the work stops the moment skin begins to grip. It finishes rinsed, dried and horizontal.
On the night
It begins standing, under warm water, with lather worked across the shoulders and down. Foam does what oil does and more: nothing catches, nothing drags, and the therapist's own body carries the pressure. The work moves from vertical to horizontal as the session goes on. You finish rinsed, warm, and dried with fresh towels.
Who takes it
Rooms with a real bathroom, and guests who would rather be warmed into looseness than pressed into it.
What it leaves
The cleanest release on the menu, and a looseness that arrives through heat rather than force. Most people sleep heavily afterwards.
